A small amusement

This morning, we ran some new drills which have recently been made mandatory by the state of Ohio, intended to quickly and easily get students off campus.

The group of kids that I was with had to go through the woods to the neighbor's house, and we emerged onto her property from underneath the maples and poplars to discover that we would have to cross some fences, which, upon trying to cross, one student became convinced were electrified ("Zappy! Zappy zappy shocky ow ow," he exclaimed, to warn us).

What else could we do? We hit the dirt and slithered, commando-style, under the fences.

After the drill was over, and we were proceeding back to the school, I made light of the obstacle with the kids. "Congratulations, folks," I told them. "You're officially ready to go parachute behind enemy lines in France and prepare the way for our boys at Normandy."

"Are you kidding?" one of the girls said, turning to me with a flick of her hair and genuine disgust in her face. "Not in these shoes."
